ARE 5.0 Prep Seminars Webinar - Construction and Evaluation

Each year the AIA Northern Virginia Young Architects Forum organizes seminars for those preparing to take the Architect Registration Exam® (ARE). Our award-winning series offers the opportunity to learn from a professional in each subject area and use that knowledge in preparation for the ARE. This year’s series focuses on ARE 5.0 content and runs from January to June. All ARE sessions offer continuing education credit and can be taken by members as review sessions.

Construction and Evaluation

This course is designed to help candidates prepare to take the Construction and Evaluation section of the Architect Registration Examination 5.0 (ARE 5.0). Construction and Evaluation is one of the six new divisions offered as part of ARE 5.0. The course content focuses on objectives related to construction contract administration and post-occupancy evaluation of projects, including issues related to bidding and negotiation, construction support services, payment processing, and project closeout.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will review the architect’s roles and responsibilities during preconstruction based on delivery method, and analyze criteria for selecting contractors and aspects of the contract or design to adjust project costs.
  • Participants will discuss the architect’s role during construction activities in evaluating conformance with contract documents, codes, regulations, and sustainability requirements, as well as understanding how to determine and evaluate construction progress.
  • Participants will understand administrative procedures and protocols during the construction process, including how to determine appropriate additional information to supplement contract documents, evaluate submittals and applications for payment, and identify and communicate non-conformance to contract documents.
  • Participants will be able to apply procedural concepts to complete close-out activities and evaluate post-occupancy building design and performance.

5 HSW LUs. Advance registration is required by noon on Wednesday prior to the seminar. No refunds are available after this time, although substitute attendees are allowed.
